The History of Dumpsters and Delta Solid Waste Management

Dumpsters—they’re often an overlooked yet crucial part of our society. Without proper trash removal, our society and earth would have consequences. From unwanted critters to widespread illnesses, trash removal is a foundation in our society today that is often taken for granted. So, if you’re reading this, thank you for your interest in the history of dumpsters as well as how our business started and has grown to who we are today. We are Delta Solid Waste Management.

The Thornycroft Company

Before dumpsters became a staple, there were trucks called “steam trucks” that were a foundational element of society. One company started this revolutionary but essential need for society: The Thornycroft Company. Before this company changed the industry, dust carts were a form of waste and trash removal. Believe it or not, rural areas did not even receive waste removal until the 1950’s. Up until then, most people were expected to bury trash if possible.

Because it was difficult to bury trash in the cities, well-populated areas were the only places to receive a form of trash removal through dust carts. Dust carts were transported via horse until steam trucks were created. A boiler that created steam is what propelled and worked the engine of the steam trucks, thus its name. A man named Messrs Thornycroft created this design while Carriage Company and Bristol Wagon created the body. Although it would still be four decades before the dumpster was created, the steam truck allowed quicker removal of trash and allowed rural areas to get help with disposing items.

Introducing the Dumpster

The Dempster brothers are who we can thank for finally introducing dumpsters to our garbage disposal services. But before one of these brothers (George Dempster) reached this point in his life, he worked in the construction industry. He noticed that in general construction work there was a need for machinery that could lift and dump materials. In the midst of his inventing, a trash crisis hit in the 1930’s. George Dempster was on a mission to prove that dumpsters could save the city time and money when it came to waste management.

By placing a few dumpsters in alleyways in the 1920’s, he soon came to find that his experiment worked. From there, he and his brother invested in patents, and the first official, patented dumpster was created in 1935 in Tennessee. Its name? Dempster Dumpmaster. Its mechanical arms were a first of its kind and revolutionized the garbage waste management industry.

George Dempster was appreciated so much by his city that he was later elected mayor in Knoxville. Despite his death in the sixties, his mark on society will not be forgotten because his invention is used every day across the country. Although Dempster units are little less likely to come by nowadays, roll-off and open-top dumpster rental models have taken the market by storm. Without George, there’s no telling if these forms of rentals would exist today.

Benefits

Still on the fence about dumpster rental? Consider a few of these benefits that you’ll appreciate after your investment:

  1. It’s easy for jobsites to become messy and unorganized. Although some people don’t mind working in that kind of environment, the biggest problem with it is that it can become a safety hazard. This can become a liability issue over time and prevent good communication overall between renovators or workers in general.

  2. The environment benefits from proper trash pick-up. It may not seem like that much of a big deal in the midst of your project(s). However, every small decision adds up and affects the environment. Make an effort to do your part and treat our earth well!

Dumpsters have an interesting history that might otherwise not be cared about. However, imagine a world without proper waste removal. Not only is it an inefficient world but an unhealthy one. Appreciating the little things we have in our society today, such as dumpsters, is important. Thanks to the Dempster brothers, specifically George Dempster, we have more opportunities for a healthy environment. Here at Delta Solid Waste Management, we respect our role in society and how we benefit those who rent from us. If you’re interested in renting from us but don’t know where to start, give us a call today and we will gladly point you in the right direction.

Keep this history of dumpsters and Delta Solid Waste Management in mind next time you see those large contraptions out and about. Take a moment to appreciate what dumpsters do for us and how they improve our world.
